Proof?

What is Proof of York?

Proof of York is an independent print studio, shop and art space located in medieval Micklegate Bar on York's famous bar walls. The studio is home to me, Andy Winn. I am a local printmaker working primarily in relief using linoleum, letterpress and wood to make prints of all sorts.

How is the building used?

Micklegate Bar is a three story medieval gateway and it is my honour to be its guardian for the next chapter in its long and rich history.

On the first floor, as you enter the building, you will find the studio and print shop. Here you can watch me work, have a chat, ask questions, buy prints or simply enjoy some fabulous features of the building including the original portcullis.

On the Second floor I host workshops and have a gallery space with framed work, more prints and other pieces that have featured in past exhibitions.

The third floor features two bartizans and a pitched ceiling with exposed king-post truss woodwork and is used exclusively for exhibitions and events organised throughout the year.

Values at Proof?

In a modern world of instant outcomes, infinite image generation and cheap mass produced crap, Proof is part of the resistance. I enjoy seeing the time and energy that has gone into producing something. I believe that the process matters as much as the outcome because that is where the true value of something is generated.

The processes I use to make prints are time consuming and require a skill set that has taken years to develop. My work is proof of that, proof of the time it has taken and proof of the work that has gone into it.
